Ways To Wear - Brown Sweater

I love style sessions for so many different reasons, they give practical examples for how to shop your closet before jumping to buy something new, each session is like a mini travel capsule, and they’re a great resource for outfit ideas to steal if you own something similar!

This weeks styling of this J.Crew brown knit sweater was done with my IG friends Erin Stoll and Maria DiLorenzo.

Pair brown with other earth tones & neutrals for a classic, elevated look.

Simple in the best way! Brown is also something I consider a universal color, meaning it looks good on everyone, it might not be your color preference but never less it looks good on everyone!

I’m also utilizing the sandwich “rule” or style idea, which is essentially sandwiching colors in an outfit. Here I’m balancing the top-heavy color of the darker sweater by layering another cream colored piece on top. You can also do this with accessories which I’ll show you next.

This knit sweater is still available in some sizes and on sale (fits true to size). Jeans are old from Target and boots are old from Vince Camuto. This convertible cape scarf is both a scarf and a shawl/wrap and its texture and warmth is DIVINE.

Combining textures is always a simple way of adding interest.

Here I’m sandwiching my black loafers (a color that doesn’t appear elsewhere in the outfit) with a black purse. One without the other might look less cohesive but the two together top off a calming, neutral look.

The combined textures of knit and linen really compliment each other - this would be a great spring outfit. Don’t be afraid to layer multiple textures together, when done right, I think it can be just as eye catching as jewelry!

My linen pants are old from Eileen Fisher but she does offer many other gorgeous options like these. Loafers are also sold out from Anthropologie, but heres a similar pair. Bag is from Madewell, linked here.

Don’t be afraid to add a pop of color.

Mint, lavender, lilac, turquoise, and pink are some examples of color that pairs beautifully with brown! Here I layered a sage green colored button down under the sweater and allowed the collar and hem to peek out. While the other outfits I put together where all neutrals in proximity to brown, have fun finding colors that play well with brown!

Layering a button down under a sweater is no new trick, it adds interest, texture, color and warmth, try it next time you want to bring new life to a sweater of yours!

Here’s a link to the J.Crew brown sweater one more time (fits true to size, if in-between, size down).

Button down was from J.Crew’s spring collection and is no longer available. Jeans are my ALL TIME favorite skinnies from Everlane (fit true to size). And I’m wearing Frye boots that I thrifted off Poshmark!

I hope you enjoy these style sessions! Which outfit was your favorite?
