Our Modern Backdoor DIY

Since we moved into our home over 2 years ago, I’ve had the itch to make our living space my own and because I didn’t like the view, I decided to change it.

I give all credit to @AngelaRoseHome who inspired me with her DIY reel on Instagram about how she transformed her dining windows and doors, reel linked here.

She also has a blog post complete with pictures and all the resources and links that guided my own project, I pretty much followed her suggestions to the letter!

I initially only wanted to add curtains to our living space and this was my Pinterest inspo:

But once I saw ARH’s reel I realized my love of black doors and windows could be a reality with a little elbow grease! Below are a few of many pictures I’ve pinned and drooled over for several years.

I began with hanging the curtain rod since I was 100% certain with that update. For the doors I used black electrical tape, which is super cheap, taped it in a grid pattern and left it for several days before tackling the project you’ll see below. I wanted to be absolutely sure I was making the right choice and the tape made for a super convincing visual.

I am by no means a home improvement influencer so I didn’t take any “before” photos, this is about the closest thing I have to one. We also had a “kick plate” on our screen door that we removed.

God bless my contractor husband who is always willing to try my crazy ideas!

It pays off to tape everything really well before painting! The one downside to this project was having a fine layer of black “dust” settle on everything that wasn’t covered, it was easy to dust off with a damp rag but again, eeeeverything got this fine, black residue on it after painting. Upside: it only smelled like paint for 48 hrs!

This is the paint I used, I got mine at our local hardware store, but here it is linked on Amazon if thats easier. Also I loved this plastic and tape combo from Amazon.

We ordered our mullions from New Panes, our order came out to $132 but we ordered a couple of extra strips just in case, that we never ended up using.

Since our door frame was still white from the outside, I wanted the PVC grid to match, so I covered the back with masking tape before painting. I used the same paint as the doors and it looks so professional! Tip: buy more paint than you think you need.

Before

After

We’re obsessed with how it turned out and how extreme the change is after only 2 days of working on it! It’s hard to believe its the same door!

I have so many other home projects in the works, should I continue to share them here? I know its outside of the usual style content I put together but decorating my home is just another creative outlet I enjoy sharing with you all! Xx Aimee
